Overview:
This session will provide an overview of the impact food and the microbiome have on anxiety, depression, and general mental health conditions. It will review the current literature on the influence of the microbiome has on mental health, how food choices may influence the microbiome, and how clinicians may be able to help improve mental health symptoms through nutritional choices.

Presenter:
Helena Boersma, EdD, LMHC, MS, NCC, IIN. Program Director, Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program, Medaille College. - Dr. Boersma has specialized in the field of eating disorders and disordered eating behaviors for nearly 20 years. She has worked at all levels of behavioral health including inpatient, outpatient, residential, and private practice, supporting individuals and families restore their relationships with food. In 2006, she began exploring the connection between the mocrobiome and how it impacted the emotional well-being of her clients struggling with eating disorders, anxiety and depression. She completed advanced certifications in integrative nutrition and gut health. Today, all her clinical sessions and lectures incorporate discussions on food, mood, and emotional well-being.
